Numerical Study of Near-Infrared Light Propagation in Aqueous Alumina Suspensions Using the Steady-State Radiative Transfer Equation and Dependent Scattering Theory

Understanding light propagation in liquid phantoms, such as colloidal suspensions, involves fundamental research of near-infrared optical imaging and spectroscopy for biological tissues. Our objective is to numerically investigate the alumina suspensions with mean particle diameter 55 nm at volume fraction range 1–20%. We calculated scattering properties using dependent theory (DST) on a length scale comparable wavelength. steady-state radiative transfer photon diffusion equations (RTE PDE) DST results based finite difference method free path. The calculations showed that reduced coefficients become more prominent higher fraction. anisotropy factor almost zero all fractions, meaning isotropic. comparative study RTE PDE approximation holds internal region fractions boundary than 1%. findings suggest usefulness model rather RTE, which provides accurate but complicated computation.
